What Makes a Seed Pelleted or Raw?
Raw seed is seed in its natural form after cleaning and processing. Its size, shape, and color vary widely by crop. Larger seeds, such as sunflower, bean, zinnia, and nasturtium, are usually simple to handle without any added coating. Very small seed, including many petunias, begonias, snapdragons, lettuce, and some herbs, can be difficult to see, separate, and sow evenly.
Pelleted seed begins as raw seed. A manufacturer applies an inert coating around each seed to create a more uniform pellet, usually rounder and much larger than the original seed. The coating is designed to absorb water and break apart after sowing so the seed can germinate.

Pelleted Seeds vs Raw Seeds: The Real Growing Differences
The biggest difference is not what the mature plant will look like. A properly stored, viable pelleted seed and a properly stored, viable raw seed of the same variety should produce the same variety. The difference appears during sowing, watering, handling, and crop planning.
Sowing accuracy and speed
Pelleted seeds shine when precision matters. Their larger, more consistent shape works well with vacuum seeders, plate seeders, seed tapes, and careful hand sowing into plug trays. If you are trying to fill 288-cell or 512-cell trays with one seed per cell, pellets can reduce doubles, missed cells, and the time spent thinning seedlings later.
This is especially valuable with fine ornamental seed. Raw seed generally offers the most flexibility for longer-term storage, provided it is kept cool, dry, dark, and protected from humidity. Pelleted seed can have a shorter practical shelf life because the coating may absorb moisture from the air or become less reliable over time. Storage recommendations vary by crop and supplier, so use the lot information and packing guidance provided with your seed.
For growers buying ahead, raw seed may be the safer option if you expect to hold inventory through more than one season. Pelleted seed is often best purchased for a defined production window, then stored carefully until sowing time. Avoid leaving either type in a hot shed, damp garage, or sunny greenhouse work area.
When Pelleted Seed Is Worth Choosing
Pelleted seed is usually the better fit when the crop has extremely small seed and each seed needs a specific place. Plug production, cell trays, hanging basket programs, and uniform retail packs are strong examples. It also makes sense when a mechanical seeder is part of the workflow or when a new grower wants more confidence while handling fine seed.
Petunias are a classic case. Their raw seed is tiny, and a pelleted form makes it much easier to place one seed on the surface of each plug cell. That can be a major advantage when starting a coordinated color program for baskets, patio containers, or spring plant sales.
Pellets are also helpful for growers managing several varieties at once. Clear sowing, less accidental oversowing, and fewer doubles can make crop records easier to maintain. For a small nursery or market garden, those small gains add up during a busy propagation week.
When Raw Seed Is the Better Buy
Raw seed is a sensible choice when size is not an obstacle. Large-seeded vegetables and flowers are easy to sow by hand, so pelleting may provide little practical benefit. Raw seed is also well suited to direct-sown beds, wildflower-style plantings, and crops where thinning is already part of the plan.
It can be the better option for growers who want the widest available variety selection. Not every cultivar is offered in pelleted form, particularly specialty flowers, uncommon colors, heirloom vegetables, and limited-run varieties. Choosing raw seed may give you access to the exact genetics, habit, bloom form, or harvest window you want.
Raw seed also rewards good technique. If you can sow carefully and keep seed trays properly labeled, there is no reason to assume that raw seed is a compromise. It is simply a different format with fewer processing steps.
How to Handle Pelleted Seeds Successfully
Pelleted seeds need a little more attention during the first stage of germination. Start with a fine, level medium so every pellet has good contact with moisture. Place the pellet at the recommended depth for that crop, then water gently enough to avoid moving it.
Keep the medium consistently moist until the pellet has fully softened and seedlings emerge. This does not mean saturated. Excess water can reduce oxygen around the seed and encourage disease problems. The goal is even moisture, stable warmth, and the correct light conditions for the variety.
If you use a humidity dome, remove or vent it once seedlings emerge so tender growth is not held in stagnant, overly wet air. Good airflow and proper spacing become just as important as watering after germination.

The variety still comes first. Choose plants suited to your growing conditions and purpose, whether that means trailing petunias for baskets, sturdy snapdragons for cuts, basil for market bundles, or dependable vegetables for the home garden. Then select the seed format that makes your sowing work easier.
