That half-used packet of petunia seed from two springs ago may still grow beautifully. Or it may produce a thin, frustrating tray with uneven germination. So, do seeds expire? Not in the way milk or food does, with one clear date when they suddenly become unusable. Seeds gradually lose viability, meaning fewer of them are able to germinate as time passes.

For home gardeners, that usually means an older packet is worth testing before you plan a whole bed around it. For greenhouse growers, market gardeners, and anyone starting large quantities, declining germination can cost valuable bench space, plugs, and production time. The age of the seed matters, but so do the species and the way it has been stored.

Do Seeds Expire or Just Lose Germination?

Every seed contains a living embryo and a limited store of energy. While it sits in a packet, that living material slowly deteriorates. Warm temperatures and moisture speed up the process. Eventually, germination falls below a level that makes the seed practical to use, even if a few individual seeds can still sprout.

This is why seed packets may carry a packed-for date, test date, or sell-by date rather than a strict expiration date. Those dates are useful reference points, not guarantees. Fresh, properly stored seed generally offers the best and most uniform germination. Older seed may still be useful, especially for a small home garden, but it deserves a little more caution.

Seed age is not the only reason germination fails. Seedlings can also struggle because of incorrect temperature, inconsistent moisture, planting too deeply, old or contaminated growing media, or weak light after emergence. Before blaming the seed, check the full growing setup.

How Long Do Common Garden Seeds Last?

Storage life varies widely by crop. The following ranges assume seed has been kept dry, cool, and protected from humidity. They are practical planning ranges, not promises that every lot will perform the same way.

Flower seeds require more species-by-species judgment. Large, dry seeds such as zinnia, marigold, sunflower, and cosmos tend to be forgiving. Fine seed and certain specialty ornamentals can be less predictable. Petunia seed is very small, and modern pelleted petunia seed adds another consideration: the coating is designed to make sowing easier, but pellets should be kept especially dry. Once they have been exposed to damp conditions, performance can decline quickly.

Some seed has naturally short storage potential regardless of how carefully it is handled. If a seed is described as recalcitrant, it cannot be dried and stored like ordinary garden seed. Most common packet seeds are not in this category, but it explains why a one-size-fits-all expiration rule does not exist.

What Makes Seeds Go Bad Faster?

Heat and humidity are the biggest enemies of seed quality. A packet left in a sunny shed, uninsulated garage, or humid basement can age much faster than the same packet stored indoors in a stable location. Repeated swings between hot and cold conditions are also harder on seeds than steady cool storage.

Moisture is particularly damaging because it can trigger metabolic activity without giving the seed the conditions it needs to complete germination. It also increases the risk of mold. Do not store seed near a sink, in a greenhouse, or in an open container in a damp basement.

Physical condition matters, too. Torn packets, crushed seeds, and seed mixed with damp potting soil are warning signs. Seeds that look clean and dry may still be viable, but visible mold, a musty odor, or clumping from moisture means it is usually better to replace them.

For growers who purchase bulk quantities, opening and closing a large bag all season exposes seed to room humidity. Dividing seed into smaller, clearly labeled airtight containers can help preserve what remains after sowing. Keep the original lot information with the seed whenever possible, particularly if you are tracking germination in production trays.

How to Store Seed for Better Germination

The most practical rule is simple: keep seeds cool, dry, dark, and labeled. A closet in a temperature-controlled part of the house is often better than a garage or garden shed. Use airtight jars, sealed containers, or zip-style bags placed inside a sturdy container.

If you save seed or keep a large inventory, add a desiccant packet to the storage container to help manage humidity. Make sure seeds are fully dry before sealing them away. If using a refrigerator, protect packets in an airtight container so they do not absorb moisture from frequent door openings. Let the sealed container warm to room temperature before opening it to avoid condensation forming directly on cold seed.

Freezing can work for thoroughly dried seed, but it is not necessary for most gardeners who expect to use their supply within a few seasons. The larger issue is consistency. A cool closet used year-round will usually outperform a freezer bag that is repeatedly thawed, opened, and returned.

Label every packet with the variety, purchase or harvest year, and any notes about performance. This takes seconds at sowing time and prevents guesswork next season. For cut flower growers and small farms, adding the lot number and a germination-test result can make future ordering decisions much easier.

Test Older Seeds Before You Sow a Whole Tray

A simple germination test tells you more than the calendar alone. Count out 10 or 20 seeds, place them on a damp paper towel, and fold or cover the towel so it stays evenly moist. Put it in a labeled plastic bag or container and keep it at a temperature appropriate for that crop. Check daily and remove seeds as they germinate.

After the normal germination window for that variety, calculate the result. If 8 of 10 seeds sprout, you have roughly 80% germination. With 20 seeds, 15 sprouts equals 75%. A larger sample gives a more reliable answer, but even a 10-seed test is useful for deciding whether an old packet is worth planting.

Do not expect a paper-towel test to perfectly duplicate plug-tray performance. It does not measure seedling vigor, uniformity, or whether a delicate seedling will emerge through media. Still, it is an excellent low-cost check. If the result is strong, sow with confidence. If it is borderline, sow more thickly only when transplanting or thinning is practical. If it is poor, fresh seed is usually the better investment.

When Fresh Seed Is Worth Buying

Fresh seed is most valuable when uniformity matters. That includes starting plug trays for hanging baskets, producing succession plantings for a market garden, filling a cut flower field on schedule, or growing a favorite variety with limited space. Re-sowing a weak lot can set a crop back by weeks, which costs more than replacing a packet.

It is also wise to buy fresh seed for short-lived species such as onion, leek, parsnip, and sweet corn. For pelleted ornamentals, premium hybrids, and varieties sold in small counts, fresh seed helps reduce the risk of uneven trays and wasted growing media.

Older seed still has a place. It can be ideal for casual experiments, extra pollinator rows, backup plantings, or varieties you do not need in precise numbers. Just adjust your expectations and test first when the crop matters.

A seed packet does not become worthless the moment a date passes. Treat that date as a prompt to check storage conditions, run a small germination test, and decide whether the lot still fits your plans. When timing, uniformity, and dependable results matter most, starting with fresh, properly handled seed gives every garden bed and tray a better beginning.
