That packet of snapdragons from three springs ago or the half-used tomato seed packet in the garage may still be worth planting. Can old seeds germinate? Often, yes. But the better question is whether enough seeds will germinate quickly and evenly enough to justify the tray space, potting mix, and growing time.

For a few containers or a backyard flower bed, experimenting with older seed can be practical. For a greenhouse bench, a market garden planting, or a carefully timed cut flower crop, low germination can create gaps that are expensive and frustrating. Seed age matters, but storage conditions and crop type matter just as much.

Can Old Seeds Germinate After Their Packet Date?

The date on a seed packet is not a switch that turns viability off overnight. It is usually a packing date, sell-by date, or season reference, not a promise that every seed becomes useless afterward. Seeds gradually lose viability. Some remain dependable for years, while others decline sharply after one season.

A seed can be viable but weak. In practical terms, that means it may eventually sprout, yet take longer to emerge or produce a smaller, less uniform seedling. For ornamental crops started in cell trays, uniformity is often as valuable as the final germination percentage. A tray with 75 percent germination may sound acceptable, but it can be inconvenient if seedlings emerge over two weeks instead of within a few days.

Cool, dry, dark storage gives old seed its best chance. Seed kept in a sealed container in a cool closet or refrigerator generally holds up far better than seed left in a hot shed, sunny windowsill, or damp garage. Heat and humidity steadily reduce seed life. A packet that is only a year old but spent the summer in a car or unconditioned greenhouse may perform worse than a five-year-old packet stored properly.

How Long Do Common Seeds Last?

There is no exact expiration schedule because seed quality at packing and storage history both affect results. Still, these ranges are useful for deciding whether to test, sow heavily, or replace a packet.

Many flower and vegetable seeds remain usable for two to four years when stored well. Tomatoes, peppers, brassicas, lettuce, calendula, marigolds, zinnias, and cosmos often have reasonable staying power. Beans, peas, cucumbers, squash, and melons can also last several years, although their large seeds are more vulnerable to moisture damage if storage is poor.

A few crops are less forgiving. Onion, leek, and chive seed often loses vigor quickly and is best replaced after a year or two. Parsnip seed is notoriously short-lived and should generally be fresh. For these crops, a marginal germination test is usually a reason to buy new seed rather than risk an uneven row.

Small ornamental seed deserves a little extra care. Petunias, pansies, violas, lisianthus, and snapdragons can remain viable for several years under excellent storage, but their small size makes them easy to expose to moisture and warm conditions. Pelleted seed is a special case. The coating makes precision sowing easier, but pellets are more sensitive to humidity and should be used within the supplier's recommended timeframe. Do not assume a pellet will store like raw seed.

Test Old Seed Before You Commit a Tray

A simple paper towel germination test gives a useful answer before you fill flats or prepare a garden bed. It is not a laboratory test, but it tells most home gardeners and small growers whether a packet is still worth using.

Use 10 seeds for a quick estimate or 20 to 25 seeds for a clearer result. Testing 100 seeds provides the easiest percentage calculation, but it is rarely practical with limited or expensive seed.

1. Moisten a plain paper towel so it is damp throughout but not dripping. Spread the seeds on one half, leaving space between them, then fold the towel over.
2. Put the towel in a labeled plastic bag or covered container to hold moisture. Write down the variety and test date, especially if you are checking several packets.
3. Keep it at a temperature suitable for that crop. Most warm-season vegetables prefer roughly 70 to 80 degrees F. Many cool-season flowers and vegetables germinate well at somewhat cooler room temperatures.
4. Check the towel every day or two. Add a few drops of water if it begins to dry, and remove seedlings once their root tip emerges so they do not grow into the towel.

Count only normal-looking sprouts as germinated. If 16 out of 20 seeds sprout, your estimated germination is 80 percent. Compare that number with what you need from the planting.

For direct sowing, seed that tests at 60 to 70 percent may still be usable if you sow a little thicker and thin later. For plug production, a 60 percent result can mean too many empty cells and too much labor. Fresh seed is usually the better choice when you need dependable scheduling, uniform trays, or a full stand in a limited growing window.

Read the Test With a Grower's Eye

The pace of germination matters as much as the final count. If half the seeds sprout promptly and the rest take much longer, the lot has likely lost vigor. You can plant it for a casual garden project, but do not rely on it for a succession planting where timing is critical.

Also watch for mold. A little surface mold can result from an overly wet towel and does not automatically mean the seed is bad. However, if seeds soften, smell sour, or collapse without sending out roots, discard them. Do not try to rescue questionable seed by soaking it for days or using extra fertilizer. Those methods do not restore lost viability.

When Old Seed Is Worth Planting

Older seed makes sense when the variety is hard to replace, the test result is strong, or the planting is flexible. A discontinued heirloom tomato, a favorite celosia color, or a small packet of specialty cut flower seed may be worth testing even if it is well past its packet date.

If the test result is fair rather than excellent, adjust your sowing plan. For direct-seeded crops, sow more thickly and thin to proper spacing after emergence. For trays, sow two seeds per cell only when the crop and transplanting plan allow it. Avoid doubling up seed indiscriminately with crops that resent root disturbance or are difficult to separate later.

Old seed can also be useful for practice. If you are learning to start petunias, germinating a few older seeds in a small tray can help you refine your light, moisture, and temperature setup. Just keep fresh seed for the plants you are counting on to fill baskets, beds, or sale tables.

When Fresh Seed Is the Better Buy

Replace seed when germination is poor, emergence is slow, or the crop has a narrow production window. This is especially true for onions, parsnips, pelleted flowers, and varieties needed for a planned harvest or event date. The cost of new seed is often lower than the cost of wasted potting mix, empty cells, and lost growing weeks.

Fresh seed is also the sensible choice when you are starting a large quantity. A home gardener may not mind filling a few gaps later. A grower producing hundreds of plugs needs predictable results. Reliable seed helps make heating mats, grow lights, greenhouse space, and labor work harder.
