Why Wave Petunias Dominate the Market
Wave petunias are the benchmark for spreading, trailing, and mounding petunia performance. Since Easy Wave® launched and changed what growers expected from a basket petunia, the Wave family has expanded to include Shock Wave® and Tidal Wave® — each with distinct growth habits that suit different production goals. If you're buying petunia seeds in bulk, understanding the differences between these series is the first step to building a program that sells.
This guide covers everything you need to know: variety selection, germination, timing, spacing, fertilizing, and troubleshooting — all from a commercial grower's perspective.
1. The Three Wave Series: What Sets Each Apart
Easy Wave®
Easy Wave® is the workhorse of the Wave family. It produces a mounding, spreading habit that works equally well in hanging baskets, combination planters, and landscape beds. It's fast-finishing, heat-tolerant, and available in a wide color range. Our bulk pelleted Easy Wave® options include:
- Easy Wave® Pink
- Easy Wave® Red
- Easy Wave® White
- Easy Wave® Blue
- Easy Wave® Violet
- Easy Wave® Rose
- Easy Wave® Silver
- Easy Wave® Navy Velour
Shock Wave®
Shock Wave® is a more compact, finer-textured trailing petunia with smaller blooms and a denser branching habit. It's ideal for smaller containers, mixed baskets, and situations where you want trailing coverage without the aggressive spread of Easy Wave®. Available in White and Red.
Tidal Wave®
Tidal Wave® is the most vigorous of the three — a true spreading giant that can reach 2–3 feet tall and spread 3–4 feet wide when grown in the ground. It's a landscape powerhouse and a dramatic statement plant in large containers. Available in Tidal Wave® Cherry.

2. When to Start Wave Petunia Seeds
Wave petunias have a crop time of 10 to 14 weeks from sowing to a finished, saleable basket. Plan your start dates accordingly:
- Spring sales (Mother's Day / Memorial Day): Start seeds in late January to mid-February.
- Summer landscape programs: Start in February to March for late spring transplanting.
- Fall programs: Start in June to July depending on your climate.
Starting too late is the most common mistake growers make with Wave petunias. Give yourself the full crop window.
3. Germinating Bulk Wave Petunia Seeds
Pelleted petunia seeds make precision sowing much easier at scale. Here's how to get consistent germination:
- Use a fine, well-draining germination mix — avoid heavy mixes that stay too wet.
- Surface sow or barely cover. Petunia seeds need light to germinate. Press pelleted seeds onto moist media and do not bury them.
- Maintain 70–75°F (21–24°C) soil temperature. Bottom heat mats are highly recommended for commercial operations.
- Keep humidity high until germination using a dome or plastic cover. Remove immediately once seedlings emerge.
- Expect germination in 7–14 days. Move seedlings to full light as soon as they break the surface.
4. Light: The Non-Negotiable Factor
Wave petunias are full-sun plants. They need a minimum of 6 hours of direct sun daily — 8 or more is ideal. In the greenhouse, supplemental lighting during winter propagation produces stockier, more uniform transplants and shortens crop time. Insufficient light is the leading cause of leggy, poorly branched Wave petunias.
5. Spacing for Baskets, Beds, and Landscape
Spacing depends on the series and your production goal:
- Easy Wave® in 10–12" baskets: 1–2 plants per basket for a full, cascading display.
- Easy Wave® in landscape beds: Space 18–24" apart. Plants will spread and fill in aggressively.
- Shock Wave® in 8–10" baskets: 1–3 plants per basket for dense coverage.
- Tidal Wave® in landscape: Space 24–36" apart. These are large plants — give them room.
For combination planters, Easy Wave® and Shock Wave® both work well as spillers alongside upright thrillers and fillers.
6. Watering Wave Petunias
Hanging baskets dry out fast, especially in summer. Wave petunias in baskets may need watering once or twice daily during peak heat. Key principles:
- Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom — never just wet the surface.
- Check moisture 1–2 inches deep before watering. If dry, water now.
- Avoid letting baskets sit in standing water, which causes root rot.
- In landscape beds, established Wave petunias are more drought-tolerant but still benefit from consistent moisture during establishment.
7. Fertilizing for Maximum Performance
Wave petunias are heavy feeders. A consistent fertilizer program is non-negotiable for peak bloom production:
- Use a balanced water-soluble fertilizer (20-10-20 or 15-5-15) applied weekly once plants are established.
- Incorporate a slow-release granular fertilizer into the potting mix at planting for baseline nutrition.
- Switch to a bloom-boosting formula (higher phosphorus) once buds appear.
- Avoid excess nitrogen, which promotes foliage at the expense of flowers.
- Flush containers with plain water periodically to prevent salt buildup.
8. Do Wave Petunias Need Pinching?
One of the selling points of the Wave series is that they require less pinching than traditional petunias due to their naturally branching, self-cleaning habit. That said, a single pinch at transplant (removing the growing tip when plants have 4–6 true leaves) still improves branching and produces a fuller finished basket. For Tidal Wave® in landscape settings, pinching is generally not needed.
9. Common Problems and Solutions
Leggy growth: Insufficient light. Move to full sun or add supplemental lighting in the greenhouse.
Yellowing leaves: Nutrient deficiency (iron or nitrogen) or overwatering. Review your fertilizer program and check drainage.
Slow to flower: Check light levels and confirm you're not over-fertilizing with nitrogen. Cool temperatures can also delay flowering.
Botrytis (gray mold): Improve air circulation, water in the morning, and avoid wetting foliage.
Root rot: Caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Use well-draining media and ensure containers drain freely.
